The Highlands
The Highlands are known for their amazing quality and feature such malts as Glenmorangie, The Glenlivet, Oban and The Singleton. The Highlands also has sub-regions known as The Islands (Highland Park, Talisker, and The Isle of Jura) and Speyside (Aberlour, Glenfiddich, The Macallan). Speyside is the largest producer of scotch whisky of all the designations.
Islay
Ardbeg, Lagavulin, and Laphroaig have come to define the area known as Islay. Located in the western islands more to the south from the area traditionally refered to as The Islands, Islay whiskys are rather distinguishable due to their barnyard and seaweed smell, derived from the fresh sea air and the pungent peat used to cure the barley.
The Lowlands
The Lowlands used to be a rich and thriving whisky producer but now only three distilleries (Glenkinchie being the most well known) are currently producing malts with one more (Daftmill) passing the three-year legal mark but holding out for extra maturity.
